Hey all,
First off, part 2 of COVID is in the works. Hopefully, it will be out by early next week (along with other pontifications). I really appreciate that folks take the time to read this blog!
As most of you probably know, this is not my full-time gig; I spend most of my time doing economic development work on the Eastside of Los Angeles. That work is supported by the generosity of people who give. I traditionally buy folks who support that work a book every year. This year, I decided to make it “Golden Gates: Fighting for Housing in America,” written by New York Times Reporter Conor Doughtery.
Housing is an issue I care a lot about, and maybe more than any other, I believe, is key to unlocking the mobility of working-class Angelinos (and Americans). The book did an excellent job painting a picture of the issue by looking at big picture economic issues and infusing those discussions with real people's stories. You do not have to be a wonk to enjoy this book!
This year I thought it would fun to add a new dimension of having a book discussion (most likely in late February/Early March) given that such discussions make reading a much more enjoyable experience, especially when you discuss a topic that can be complex and wonky!
I figured I would be remiss if I didn’t give the folks reading this blog to join in by giving to that work before the end of the year (be sure to put my name “Thomas Irwin” into the staff box). If you cannot give because of unique circumstances but are interested in joining, you can also email me (thomasirwin13@gmail.com), and I would be happy to include you as well!
Until next time!
